The kernel is the core of every operating system. It is the layer between the
applications and the hardware, and contains device drivers for all common
hardware.
This kernel is optimized for machines with one processor. It will work on a
multiprocessor machine, but will not make use of the extra CPUs. If you are
using a multiprocessor machine, use the kernel-smp package instead.
