<p>You can write documents, create spreadsheets and stunning
presentations using <span class="application">OpenOffice.org</span>, a
full-featured <span class="application">Microsoft Office</span>-compatible
office suite. We briefly present the word processor interface, please
refer to the <a class="ulink" href="http://www.openoffice.org" target="_top">OpenOffice.org
Home Page</a> for more information.

<p><span class="inlinemediaobject"><img src="images/ooo-writer.png"></span>Launch the <span class="application">OpenOffice.org</span>
word processor by choosing <span class="guimenu">Office</span> → <span class="guimenuitem">OpenOffice.org Writer Word Processor</span> from the main menu. You can start typing your document's
text right away and insert tables, lists, images (see <a class="xref" href="ch02s05.html#ooo-writer-interface" title="Figure 2.7. The Familiar Word Processor Interface">Figure 2.7, “The Familiar Word Processor Interface”</a>).

<p>Even though you can directly change the appearance of your document
(for example, font family and size), it is recommended that you use styles
to standardize on document formatting. Press <span class="keycap"><strong>F11</strong></span> to open
the <span class="guilabel">Styles and Formatting</span> options, select some text
and click on a style name to apply that style to the selected text.
</p>
<p>Use <span class="application">OpenOffice.org Calc</span> for spreadsheets
and simulations and <span class="application">OpenOffice.org Impress</span> for
creating stunning presentations with slides containing text, lists,
images, charts, animations, transition effects, etc.
