Introduction

    This document is a collection of notes for the installation of IRAF
under AOSVS.  It is not a complete guide, as is available for UNIX or VMS.
Please refer to the UNIX or VMS guides for more information.  These notes
basically describe things unique to the AOSVS installation.

System Installation

    The following steps should be used to install the IRAF system under AOSVS.
Since the AOSVS version is distributed as a Load and Go tape, there should be
very little other configuration steps to do.  See the UNIX or VMS installation
manuals for reference.

Create an IRAF Account

    The first step is to set up an account for IRAF.  Become a superuser and
use the PREDITOR to create a user profile called IRAF.  A sample profile
appears in the appendix to this document.  Users who wish to use IRAF will
need at least these privileges, too.  Note that 100MB of disk quota is given.
About 70MB are necessary to hold the full system, including sources.  (This
will be much less when a shared library version of AOSVS/IRAF is developed
under AOSVS revision 7.)  If necessary, the system may be stripped down to
only runtime files, which will take up about 24MB. To do this, see the UNIX
installation manual.

Choose a root directory for IRAF

    The root directory for IRAF should be a subdirectory of an LDU.  This
is done for two reasons.  First, the shortest pathname to the root
directory will speed up pathname resolution.  Second, this will avoid
the maximum directory depth limit of AOSVS with IRAF's deeply
nested directory tree.  So, create a CPD called IRAF, with a 100MB limit.

Read the Distribution Tape

    The system is distributed on one or more DUMP format tapes.
The order in which the tapes are read is not important.  If you requested
1600 BPI, you will get two tapes, and you should type the following to load
each tape.

Set up the Host System Environment

    You now must install some links so that users may gain access to IRAF.
To do this, run the following CLI script to install the links.  Examine
the script carefully before you run it, so that you understand what it does
and to make sure that it doesn't conflict with something locally installed.

The first argument to install_links should be the pathname of the directory
or LDU containing the IRAF root directory "IRAF".  The second argument can be
the pathname of any directory on the users' default searchlist.

    Note that the filename, IRAFDIR, is a reserved symbol, and should not be
used anywhere else in the AOSVS system.

    If your system doesn't already have one, you will probably want to set
up a scratch directory called :TMP.

    Edit the following command into your system UP.CLI macro, near the end:

    This will setup the IRAF magtape allocation facility.  Edit the file
:iraf:aosvs:os:util:remop.cli to set the ACL of the file @magtape.defacl
according to your wishes.  An ACL of +,WARE will allow non-IRAF users
to use the magtapes without allocation.  A null ACL will require non-IRAF
users to use the macros ?MT, AMT, and DMT to access the tape drives.
You should edit
:iraf:aosvs:os:util:?mt.cli to reflect you own tape drive configuration.
If you use the /noremop switch, the IRAF magtape allocation facility
will not be setup.

    If you do not use the /nonet switch, you will get the TCPIP networking
facility for IRAF.  You must have previously configured TCPIP, of course.

Configure the IRAF Environment

    You may now log in as user IRAF to check that certain configuration
files reflect your site.  Edit them as necessary.  The first directory to
check is :IRAF:DEV.  The most important file here is DEVICES.  Edit this
file to reflect your local complement of magnetic tapes.  Check the other
files in this directory.  See the UNIX installation manual for reference.
Possible changes would be to edit TERMCAP and GRAPHCAP to support other
terminals, to cache these entries for efficiency, to edit HOSTLOGIN, HOSTS,
& UHOSTS for networking, or to link in your CALCOMP library.

    Next check directory :IRAF:AOSVS:HLIB.  The most important files here are
ZZSETENV.DEF and LOGIN.CL.  You may also want to look at DISKSPACE.CL,
GRIPES.CL, and SPY.CL.  If you ever wish to rebuild any IRAF libraries, and
you don't have MV/UX, IRAF will not be able to topologically sort the libraries
and you will need to use the "-t" switch for LFLAGS in the file MKPKG.INC.
You might also want to check the files IRAFCC.CLI, IRAFF77.CLI, IRAFLINK.CLI,
IRAFMASM.CLI, and IRAFSPP.CLI to make sure that they are pointing to the
correct directories for the compilers.  You may also want to check the batch
queue definitions in IRAFQBBATCH.CLI, IRAFQBDEFER.CLI, IRAFQBFAST.CLI, and
IRAFQBSLOW.CLI.  Finally check IRAF.CLI, MKIRAF.CLI, and UPIRAF.CLI.

    Finally check the file, :IRAF:AOSVS:HLIB:LIBC:IRAF.H.  You may want to
edit the values of IRAF, HOST, or TMP, but this is not necessary.  You can
edit the pathnames of the include files, but this is also not necessary, as
they all go through a symbolic link.

Log into IRAF

    The system is now ready for users to log into the IRAF system.  Log in
as a normal user and create an IRAF HOME directory.  I recommend that this
be a control point directory immediately below your system home directory.
Move to that directory and run MKIRAF.  Answer the questions.  Taking the
default is recommended.  Note that you may redefine your "imdir" later.
Make sure that the name of your terminal appears in dev$termcap.  You may
now enter the IRAF system by typing "iraf".  After this initial setup,
you may enter IRAF just by moving to this IRAF home directory and typing
"iraf".  Note that you must start up IRAF from this same IRAF home directory.

    Note that to use IRAF on a Visual 500, you must display BOTH alpha and
graphics planes, use 3/4 graphics scaling, and graphics trailer code #001=013.
Also note the following different definitions of keyboard keys as opposed
to other IRAF systems.  The keyboard interrupt (abort) is either ^C^A or
^C^B instead of just ^C.  The End Of File key is ^D, not ^Z.  Available
editors are SED, VI, and EMACS.  The OS escapes are:

    The following background options are available:

	& (default) = child process at the same priority as your cl
	&bkg        = child process at the same priority as the batch queues
	&batch      = batch queued jobs

Unlike other systems, if you logout of IRAF, you will kill your background
child processes (first two options).  If you use a batch queued job, you may
logout of IRAF, and even logout of AOSVS.  Due to restriction of AOSVS, IRAF
will not work in CPU time limited batch streams.

System Maintenance

    Extensive system maintenance should not be necessary at other sites.  The
following is included just in case.  The procedures are similar to those for
UNIX.  See the UNIX installation manual for further reference.

Bootstrapping

    Bootstrapping the system recompiles and links the host system interface,
the kernel libraries and bootstrap utilities.  To do this type the following:

Sysgen

    The sysgen procedure recompiles and links the portable part of the system.
Certain files must be precompiled to avoid compiler optimization problems.
Then you will probably want to go back and rebuild the bootstrap utilities
with full filename mapping.  Type the following:

Relinking the System

    A relink of the system is done to force all the executables to be
relinked to incorporate any changes in the libraries.  Type the following:

The last command may not be necessary if there are no changes to libos.a.

Bringing the system up to date after loading it from tape.

    Since AOSVS does not properly restore the time last modified of the
files you read from the distribution tape, you may wish to bring the
IRAF libraries up to date without having to recompile everything.  To do
this, follow the instructions for the -u option of mkpkg in the online help.

Multiple versions of IRAF on the same computer.

    Multiple versions of IRAF may be maintained on the same computer system,
and may be selected at will.  Simply load the entire new IRAF directory tree
at any desired IRAF root directory, and change the link :IRAFX (or :IRAFO)
to point to that new IRAF root directory.  To get the new version, you must
type IRAFX (or IRAFO) before typing MKIRAF or IRAF.  Of course, this can be
put into your login startup CLI script.  Any equivalent operation is OK, too.
IRAFX is used for new (experimental) versions of IRAF.  IRAFO is used for
older versions than the current default system.

    New devices are usually very easy to add to the system.  See the UNIX
installation manual for full details.

Graphics Terminals

    A new graphics terminal can be interfaced by simply installing its
entry into dev$graphcap.  See the GIO documentation.

Hardcopy Graphics plotters

    A new hardcopy graphics plotter can be interfaced most easily through
the Simple Graphics Interface (SGI).  This requires designing a graphcap entry
as above and writing a very simple metacode translator host program.  See
the above mentioned documentation and the SGI manual.

B) AOSVS Bugs.

    The current DG release of C has a bug which hangs up IRAF if the file
:ETC:PASSWD does not exist or is not setup properly.  This file comes
with MV/UX.  If you are running MV/UX, and you keep the file up to date,
you should have no problem.  Otherwise, you should create the file and
enter the following as a minimum.  Ideally, you should add one line for
each user in the system.
