<p>These are commonly used for building thread-safe "reference" counters for C++ classes. The <a class="el" href="classost_1_1_atomic_counter.html" title="The AtomicCounter class offers thread-safe manipulation of an integer counter. ">AtomicCounter</a> depends on the platforms support for "atomic" integer operations, and can alternately substitute a "mutex" if no atomic support exists.</p>
