NOTES ABOUT PTHREAD AND KAFFE
=============================

Kaffe can now make use of native threads (currently only Linux pthreads).
To enable this add the following option to configure:

	--with-threads=unix-pthreads

Note that this will only work with GLIBC 2.1.2 or later. If you are using
GLIBC 2.1.1 there is a patch in the developers directory you need to apply.

Limitation
----------

* Certain I/O operations cannot be interrupted.

* We do not support asynchronous exceptions via Thread.stop(). This will never
be implemented as this is a buggy part of the Java specification and its use
has been deprecated by GNU Classpath developers. The reason is that it can leave
the VM is an unknown state.

SMP support
-----------

Kaffe with pthread will work on an SMP Linux machine and make use of all the
processors. *However*, Kaffe is currently not particularly SMP aware and
most benchmarks we've tried show dismal performance on SMP. These problems
will be addressed shortly (but no in this release).
