Using xbuffy on imap mailboxes

You specify an imap mailbox using the standard c-client notation, and
you write "imapbox" instead of "mailbox".  For instance,

Xbuffy will ask you for your password for each mailbox before opening
up its window.  This means you can't easily start up xbuffy inside
your .Xstartup or whatever.  After it has authenticated you to all of
your servers, it will go into the background on its own as usual.

Xbuffy stashes your password in memory, so after you type it once, it
can re-authenticate you to the server.  But there are some cases where 
this may not work.  In these cases, xbuffy will ask again for your
password.  If it's running in the background, there's no easy way to
type in your password, so xbuffy will hang.  So you might want to try
the new -nofork option for running in the foreground.

Xbuffy's default mode for imap mailboxes is to use the c-client
library's mail_status() call, which opens a connection to the server,
asks about the number of new messages (or total number of messages in
origMode), and closes.  This is a heavy-duty operation, and it
shouldn't be run very frequently.  Please don't set your polltime any
lower than 3 minutes in this default mode.  (If you do set your
polltime below 180 in this mode, you will see a message from Mark
Crispin, one of the main authors of the IMAP protocol [see rfc2060]).

Xbuffy's alternate mode is called "keepopen".  In this mode, a
connection to the server is made and kept open for the duration of
xbuffy's execution.  At every polltime, xbuffy sends a mail_ping
(typically resulting in a NOOP request to the server) to discover
updates to the mailbox.  The server may not give xbuffy enough
information to determine exactly the number of unseen messages, but
xbuffy tries to guess.  Whenever xbuffy shows you the headers (as a
pop-up or in response to a click), it has to perform a search on the
server, so it is able to update to the correct number of unseen
messages.  So if you have a headertime set, then the number will
always be correct.

If you *don't* have a headertime set, the possibility exists that the
approximation will get increasingly bad.  If you're worried about
this, you can set the additional option "countperiod 20", where
the "20" means that on every 20th polltime, count the actual number of 
unseen messages and fix the approximation.  If you set
"countperiod 1", you will always see the correct number, but you
will be performing an imap search operation every polltime.

For very frequent updates, keepopen mode is less of a strain on the
server than the default mode.  But remember that a typical imap server 
runs a separate process for each connection, and each process can take 
many megabytes of server memory.  Further, xbuffy currently opens a
separate server connection for each mailbox!  (This should be fixed in 
the future.)

The recommended thing to do is to use the default mode with a polltime 
of 5-10 minutes, and to ask your server's administrator what she would 
consider overuse of the server's resources.

Limitations
-----------

Presumably you are using not only Xbuffy, but also some other imap
client to actually read your mail.  This means you have two clients
which can be competing for access to your mailbox.  Depending on your
server and its configuration, this may mean that xbuffy simply won't
be able to work the way you want it to.  For instance, if the UW imap
server is using unix-format mailboxes, it may not give xbuffy updates
any more after your real client reads the mail.  This particular case
can be avoided by using a better format for your mailboxes, but be
aware that these issues can stop xbuffy from doing its job.  (Such
problems are more likely to occur in keepopen mode.)
