mgetty-1.1.30-1mdk.ppc.rpm

WHAT IS IT?

New_fax is a utility for mgetty+sendfax from Gert Doeringer. It is designed
to be called after mgetty+sendfax received a fax and offers powerfull features
for postpresessing the fax.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Mgetty has an interface for postprocessing faxes. It executes a command
called "new_fax" after it received a fax. This program is given the
status, the sender's id, the number of pages and a list of all files
containing the g3-images of the faxes. The number of files equals to the
number of pages.

FEATURES

- Freely configurable with a file
- Actions depend on the sender's ID
- Sender can be assigned a name
- All actions are implemented as modules

REQUIREMENTS

New_fax requires

- Mgetty+Sendfax from Gert Doeringer
- The NetPBM-Package for modifing images non-interactively

ACTIONS

The actions are shell-functions that do a speecified job for the post
precessing:

- Print a fax on a printer
- Send a notification mail to an user
- Send a notification on a user's tty (write)
- Send the fax as MIME-encoded mail to an user
- Delete the fax
- Compress the fax
- Forward the fax to another fax machine

All of these actions can be mixed together depending on a sender's ID.

THE CONFIGURATION FILE

The configuration file usually has the name /usr/etc/mgetty+sendfax/faxlist
but can be moved to any destination. The file is referenced inside new_fax
with the variable "config" in the header. The config file consists of
sections. Each section contains at least one identifier which must be a
substring of the sender's id. Sections are seperated with a blank line.
A matching id will activate the current
section. All sections are read from top to buttom and the first matching
section will be taken. An empty identification can be taken for all faxes,
e.g. for a default section:

	id 578399

This id would match all faxes containing "578399" in the phone number, e.g.
"49 69 5783997". To assign a name to this fax, the keyword "name" is used.

	id 578399
	name Douglas Adams

I can use more ids to activate a section but assign a name seperately:

	id 578399
	name Douglas Adams
	id 153234
	name Desaster Area

Now I can do something with the fax. If I want send a notification mail
to myself I use the keyword "notify":

	notify dekay@ipf.de

If I want to send the fax as a MIME-encoded mail to myself, I can use
the keyword "mail":

	mail dekay@ipf.de

In order to make a notification on the user's tty if he is online, use
the keyword "write":

	write dekay root

This will send a "write"-notification to the user, but only if the user
is logged in and did not disable writes to his tty with "mesg n". Faxes
can be printed with "print", where a printer name can optionally be
specified:

	print hplj

will print the fax to the hplj. Faxes can be deleted with "delete":

	delete

would delete the entire fax, regardless if it was processed before or not.
In order to compress the fax, you can use the keyword "compress".

	compress

would compress the archive. The fax can also be forwarded to another
machine using the keyword "fax":

	fax 923463

would fax the fax to the number 923463. This might be usefull if you are
away from home for a while but want still receive faxes.

EXAMPLES

Example 1: Standard default section

This is an example for a standard default section, where the fax will be
mailed to the user dekay and a notification will be written to the tty if
I am online. After that the fax will be deleted. Two of the faxes are named:

	id 12345
	name Douglas Adams
	id 4563234
	name Desaster Area
	id
	mail dekay@ipf.de
	notify dekay root
	delete

Example 2: An unwanted fax sender

If somebody disturbs me by sending unwanted faxes I simply trash them unread:

	id 934563
	delete

Example 3: A friend receives faxes from two sender regularey

A friend of mine has not fax, but needs to receive faxes from one sender. In
this example 9788434 is the sender of the fax and peter@domain.net is the
e-mail address of my friend.

	id 9788434
	mail peter@domain.net

Example 4: I am on vacation but I want my faxes to be forwarded to me or
somebody

	id
	fax 97843988

Where 97843988 is the number of the fax I want the faxes forwarded to.

HOW DO I ADD ACTION MODULES?

Actions are implemented as shell functions and the list of all pages are
given as parameters. The images are referenced with full path names!
The function "log" offers a log facility and logs by default into the file
/var/log/fax, each line starting with date and time.

These environment variables contian more inforation:

pages: pages containts the number of pages of the current fax and is also
the number of parameter passed to the action module.

name:	The name of the sender. This variable only contians a name if the id
matched some id-keyword inside the configuration file.

id: The is the sender's id.

data:	This are the unsplit parameters for the keyword. The line
"command para1 para2" would be passed in data as "para1 para2", so
you can split it if you need.

This is an example of a stupid action module "list" listing all files of
the fax.

	list()
	{
		for i in $*
		do
			echo $i
		done
	}
